Loughborough swimmers opened their racing accounts with fine early season performances at the Darlington Open Meet. Great Britain International, Joe Roebuck, was prolific during the two day meet, taking 5 titles, breaking 2 meet records and being awarded the Top Male Senior Swimmer of the Meet. Roebuck’s record breaking swims came in the 200m IM and 200m butterfly but it was his swims in the 200m backstroke and 200m breaststroke which captured the imagination. Looking to improve the backstroke leg of his 400m IM he posted a credible 2:03.48 for 200m backstroke to finish 2nd behind teammate Scott Hathaway whilst he dominated the field in the 200m breaststroke with a 2:16.28. Loughborough dominated the 100m backstroke with Scott Hathaway, James Lovatt & Andrew Donaldson taking the first 3 places. Not to be outdone the breaststroke boys pulled off a clean sweep in both events; James Tait, Iain Scanlon & Adam Freundlich taking the 100m medals and Joe Roebuck, Chris Bayliss & James Tait taking the 200m medals. In the women’s events Sophie Casson, Rachel Lefley and Amy Smith all hit the golden trail with Sophie taking the 200m free & 200m back, Amy sprinting to victory in the 50m & 100m free and Rachel swimming a strong final 25m to clinch the 100m backstroke. Loughborough newcomers Erin Jeffery, Emma White and Kate Hutchinson also added to the Loughborough medal haul. Erin Jeffery taking silver in the 200m IM, Emma White securing silver & bronze in the 100m & 200m breaststroke and Kate Hutchinson racing to silver & bronze in the 200m & 100m Breast |
