Loughborough University swimmers produced impressive performances to dominate the British Universities & Colleges National Short Course Championships held in Ponds Forger, Sheffield. Olympic silver medallist, David Davies, opened the proceedings with gold medal winning performances in the 800m & 1500m freestyles; his time of 7:49.06 in the 800m freestyle being a new BUCS record. World record holder, Liam Tancock, sprinted to a golden hat trick and set new BUCS records in the 50/100 backstroke & 50m freestyle events, the latter also being a new club record; he was also instrumental in the gold medal winning freestyle & medley relays. Joe Roebuck, a GB international looked impressive as he took the 200m & 400m individual medleys in 1:58.98 & 4:14.94 respectively; he went on to take silver in the 200m butterfly. Scott Hathaway produced the swim of his life to clinch the 200m backstroke title in a new record of 1:54.98; his 54.02 in the 100m event was also an impressive lifetime best. Chris Watkinson was a points machine in the breaststroke events; winning the 100m in 1:01.84 and taking silvers in the 50m & 100m events. Caitlin McClatchey, double Commonwealth Champion & 2008 Olympian, swam well paced races to lift the 400m & 800m freestyle titles whilst Irish Olympian Melanie Nocher demonstrated her class with victories in the 200m individual medley and 200m backstroke; her time of 2:08.67 in the latter being a new BUCS record. Lougborough newcomers Rachel Lefley, Erin Jeffery & Kate Hutchinson were also in medla winning form. Lefley raced to victory in the 50 & 100m backstrokes; her time of 28.87 in the former being a new BUCS record, Jeffery demonstrated her versatility with gold in the 400m individual medley, silver in the 800m freestyle and bronze in the 200m individual medley while Hutchinson took gold in the 200m breast, and silver in the 50m & 100m Breaststroke. Jade Barclay and Kistry Armstrong completed a Loughborough 1-2 in the 200m butterfly, both swimmers recording lifetime best performances with 2:13.03 & 2:14.41 respectively. Amy Smith made a welcome return to form to win the 50m freestyle and record a lifetime best of 54.48 to place 2nd in the 100m freestyle. She also formed an essential part of the women's medley & freestyle relays which struck gold; the freestyle team setting a new record of 1:42.52. The 3 day meet saw Loughborough deliver an extravanganza of swimming and secure an impressive medal haul of: 22 Gold, 17 Silver & 12 Bronze. |
