The final day of competition is upon us at the European SC and the Loughborough swimmers are still amazing us with their performances in the pool. Melanie Nocher went into the 200 back heats having already swum near to her best time of 2:08.52 three weeks previous at the BUCS SC championships in Sheffield. This morning Melanie smashed that time by two and half seconds to post a new Irish Record time of 2:06.08 and make her first European final. Joining her in the final will be her Loughborough team mate Elizabeth Simmonds who also qualified in a time of 2:06.01. Ross Davenport and Ben Hockin swam in the 200m free with Ross swimming a new club record time of 1:44.93 and Ben finishing in a time of 1:46.80. James Gibson finished off the competition with a swift 2:08.50 in the 200m breast. This is just two tenths of a second of his club record that he set in 2003. His time left him one place off qualifying for tonight's final. To finish off the morning Craig Gibbons and Matt Bowe were part of the Great Britain 4 x 50 free relay team. Craig led off in a new All Time Top 5 time of 22.08 and Matt finished with a 21.74 split. The team unfortunately finished in 9th place just missing out on a final place in the last session of the competition tonight. |
