Ed Downes produced outstanding swimming during the first two days of the Conference USA meet held in Houston, Texas. On the opening day he helped the Southern Methodist University 4 x 200 yards freestyle relay to victory and a NCAA Provisional Qualifying Time. He followed this with a golden swim in the 200 yards individual medley, taking gold in a new SMU record of 1:46.13; this time was also an NCAA 'B' time. Justine Clarke also scored valuable points for the Lady Mustangs with a 3rd place finish in the women's 200 yards individual medley in a time of 2:03.37.
