 London 2012

The party continues at Ponds Forge
18th March 2009

Such was the power of Loughborough Swimming on day 2 of the World Trials that one casual observer remarked " There's only one team at the party".
British record breaking swims from Liam Tancock in the 100m backstroke (53.20)(Pictured) and Fran Halsall in the 50m freestyle (24.53) were supported by a host of fine performances.
In the opening event Fran Halsall stormed to silver in the 100m butterfly with a new University record time of 58.11. While Joe Roebuck looks to have secured his place on the team with a second place finish in the 200m butterfly; his time of 1:57.67 also being a new University Record.
Olympic finalist, Lizzie Simmonds overcame illness to take the 100m backstroke title in (1:01.06) whilst teammate Rachel Lefley swam an outstanding race to take bronze in a new lifetime best of 1:02.67.
Two Loughborough swimmers once again featured on the podium of the women's 50m freestyle. Fran Halsall taking gold & Amy Smith recording a lifetime best of 25.59 to take bronze.
Semi-final action saw Kate Haywood dominate the 100m breaststroke to qualify as fastest for the final in (1:08.44), whilst James Gibson, still carrying a slight beard, qualified in 3rd spot for the corresponding men's final in (1:01.17)
David Davies (1:47.31), Ross Davenport (1:48.09), Ben Hockin (1:48.87) and Robert Bale (1:49.21) all qualified for the final of the men's 200m freestyle; while Jo Jackson in a new University record time of (1:56.96) and Caitlin McClatchey (1:58.49) are the top two qualifiers for the women's 200m freestyle final.
Lifetime best performances from James Lovatt in the 200m IM (2:05.75), Adam Freundlich in the 100m breaststroke (1:04.20) and Sophie Casson in the 200 Free (2:02.02) capped an impressive evening's swimming from a vibrant team.
Ian Armiger (Director of Swimming) said " We've had an amazing two days of swimming at this meet. The team has fired on all cylinders and we are looking forward to the rest of the week".
