| Loughborough Swimmers continue to Impress |

Loughborough swimmers continued their impressive swimming at the World Championships in Sheffield. Sophie Casson,pictured, competing in only her third 800m freestyle produced an outstanding performance to slash seven seconds off her personal best time (8.44.05), finishing in 4th place and securing a place on the Great Britain Open water Team.
Jade Barclay and Scott Hathaway appeared in the only two other finals contested last night; Barclay finishing 6th in the 200m butterfly in 2:15.05 and Hathaway placing 5th in the 200m backstroke in 2:01.66. Liam Tancock, best known for his backstroke skills, was the shock fastest qualifier for the men's 100m freestyle; his time of 48.76 being a new University record. Ross Davenport (49.49), Grant Turner (49.49) and Ben Hockin (49.84) will all join Tancock in the prestigious final tonight.
Fran Halsall (54.79), Caitlin McClatchey (55.18), Amy Smith (55.85) and Joanne Jackson (56.07) successfully negotiated the semi-finals of the 100m freestyle to all qualify for the final later tonight.
Rachel Lefley, pictured, produced a truly outstanding performance in the women's 200m backstroke to record a five second lifetime best of 2:12.67 and qualify as second fastest for the final. Lizzie Simmonds, coping with illness, also qualified as third fastest for the final this evening.
Double Olympic medallist, David Davies, eased his way through into the final of the men's 1500m freestyle as did Loughborough teammate Daniel Fogg. |
