Loughborough University concluded the World Trials in Sheffield with a host of outstanding performances. David Davies, Lizzie Simmonds & Fran Halsall struck gold with excellent swims. Double Olympic medallist, Davies, stretched the field from the beginning of the 1500m freestyle to finish in a new University mark of 14:52.14; Teammate Daniel Fogg taking bronze in 15:16.59. Lizzie Simmonds dug deep to complete the backstroke double and lift the 200m title. Despite sickness she utilised her talent and fitness to win in 2:10.48 and secure her slot on this event in Rome. Fran Halsall powered her way to victory and an new University record of 54.03 in the 100m freestyle. Loughborough swimmers took four out of the top five slots with Caitlin McClatchey 2nd (55.06), Jo Jackson 4th (55.52) and Amy Smith (55.63) to confirm their fine tradition of women's sprint freestyle swimming. Surprise fastest qualifier for the men's 100m freestyle final, Liam Tancock, swam another sub 49 seconds to take silver in 48.87, Ross Davenport placed 3rd (49.17), Ben Hockin 5th (49.69) and Grant Turner 7th (50.17). Joe Roebuck paid the price for a ultra controlled first half of the 400IM by missing a podium finish. Superb breaststroke and freestyle legs saw him record a lifetime best of 4:16.64 but finish a disappointing 4th. In the corresponding women's final Erin Jeffery lifted her game to place 7th in a fine 4:52.05. Rachel Lefley and Kate Hutchinson placed 4th & 5th in the 200m backstroke & 200 breaststroke respectively. Rachel, bronze medallist in the 100m backstroke was slightly shy of her superb heat swim with 2:13.85 whilst Kate raced to another lifetime best of 2:34.34 in the 200m breaststroke. Matt Bowe narrowly missed the medals wit a 4th place finish in the 100m butterfly; his time of 53.05 being only two tenths outside his lifetime best. |
