Loughborough swimmers, Sophie Casson and Daniel Fogg, will take to the Red Sea tomorrow for a gruelling 10km race.
The European Open Water Swimming Cup event which takes place in Eilat, Israel will be used as a trial to select the Great Britain Team for the forthcoming World Championships in Rome. For Sophie this is her first ever international cap and was gained by finishing 4th in the 800m freestyle at the British Championships; a remarkable achievement considering it was only her third race over the distance. A former backstroker, Sophie switched to freestyle in December 2008 and at 23yrs of age has made remarkable progress in the middle distance events. A delighted Sophie said " It has always been my dream to represent Great Britain. This will be a steep learning curve for me but I am determined to give it my all." In contrast, Daniel Fogg is a seasoned Open Water campaigner, having competed in numerous events around the world. Daniel, currently British number 3 in the 1500m freestyle, will be looking to secure his berth on the World Championships team in either the 10km or the 1500m.
Good luck to Sophie and Daniel......watch out for the fish! |
