Loughborough University swimmers ended their Scottish Campaign with fine swims in the closing session. The opening event of the evening, the men's 100m butterfly, always promised to be a thriller and the it didnt disappoint. With Plymouth's Anthony James sitting in the "hot seat" for World Championships selection it was up to Loughborough alumni Ian Hulme and Loughborough's Matthew Bowe to mount a challenge. A blistering opening 50m from Hulme and a misjudged turn from Bowe saw the race come down to the wire; Hulme getting the touch in 52.09, James silver in 52.13 and Bowe setting a new University record of 52.40 for bronze. Amy Smith secured a berth on the team with a bronze medal winning performance in the 100m freestyle (55.89). Smith has made remarkable progress since taking time out after the 2008 Olympic Trials and has firmly established herself as one of Britain's finest sprinters. With five swimmers in the 200m freestyle vying for a spot on the GB Team tactics were always going to play a crucial role. Loughborough's Ben Hockin took out the first half of the race in 52.02 and at the 150m mark all five were still in contention. Loughborough's Robert Bale put in an amazing final 50m to take silver in 1:47.68 behind race winner Andrew Hunter (Stirling) and to secure his place on the World Championship Team. Craig Gibbons, fresh from his University record breaking swim in the 50m freestyle, produced a powerful 50m backstroke to take gold in 26.10 with teammate Scott Hathaway taking bronze. A host of best times and medal winning performances through the four day meet saw Loughborough dominate the points table and lift the Top Team Trophy. |
