This evening has produced another mind blowing exhibition of speed and power at the World Swimming Championships. We have seen four World records fall in the women's 100m fly, 100m & 200IM; with only the 100 breast going in the men's events. Loughborough swimmers Liam Tancock was the first Great Britain swimmer out tonight. He swam an impressive race to finish 8th overall in a time of 53.12 to secure his place in tomorrow night's final. It just shows how strong the events are at these championships when the World record holder Arron Peirsol cannot make the final. The backstroke trend followed with Lizzie Simmonds swimming under the minute for the first time, setting a new University record time of 59.55 to also progress through to tomorrow nights final in 7th place. Gemma Spofforth(Florida) followed that up with another impressive time of 58.74 to safely go through as well. Ross Davenport produced the Loughborough swim of the night to set a new British record in the 200m free. He swam in the 2nd of the two semi finals and eventually touched the wall in a time of 1:46.46 to finish 11th overall. He surpassed the old record by 1 hundredth of a second.
