World Champs day 1 Finals
27th July 2009

The first night of finals at the World Championships was amazing. In total 6 World records went last night with many of the relays also being under the old World record times.
The night was a success for Loughborough Swimming with 8 swimmers competing throughout the session.
The performance of the night was the Silver medal for Joanne Jackson(pictured) in the 400m free. She was next to the fastest women in the world, Italian, Federica Pellegrini. Jo went head to head with Pellegrini through the first 200m but with the expectations of the home crowd Pellegrini was not going to falter this time. She gradually drew away from Jo to be the first women under the 4 minute barrier for the 400m. Jo finished 2nd in a new British and Commonwealth record time of 4:00.60.
Earlier in the session David Davies had also reached the 400m free final. This was a new milestone for Dave. His training this year has been focused on improving his speed over shorter distances. He went slighty slower than his morning swim finishing 8th in 3:47.02. After breaking the British record in the heats of the 100m breast, James Gibson, went into the evenings semi finals with great motivation to make the final. He was slightly disappointed in his time of 59.91 to finish 14th. This was the first meet that James has completed two swims under the minute and all also the first time all of the semi finalists swam under the minute barrier.
The night was finished off with the 4 x 100 free relay finals. Fran Halsall, Caitlin McClatchey and Amy Smith were involved in the fastest ever women's relay at any Championships. Britta Steffan led the German team off in a new World record time of 55.22 to put the 100m free time out of reach off nearly every one else. The Loughborough girls and Katherine Wyld(Nova) produced another blistering performance to again break the British record with a time of 3:36.99.
Liam Tancock and Ross Davenport again joined Adam Brown and Simon Burnett in the men's 4 x 100 free relay. They performed magnificently to achieve a 7th place finish in a time of 3:12.09.
There will be more action from Loughborough swimmers today so keep an eye out.
