The third night of finals in Rome witnessed another night of truly fantastic swimming. The swimmers are producing performances beyond expectation and everyone is witnessing swimming at it's best. This was shown by Gemma Spofforth(Florida) who was down by over half a second at the turn in the 100m back and produced an amazing second 50m to smash not only her personal best time but the British, European, Commonwealth and World record. Lizzie Simmonds in the form of her life again swam under the minute barrier to record a time of 59.71 to finish 7th. Joanne Jackson led the Loughborough assault on world swimming by producing another record breaking performance in the 200m free. She eventually qualified for today's final in third place in a new British record time of 1:55.54. Teammate Caitlin McClatchey just missed out on the final finishing in 9th place but her time of 1:56.62 was a huge drop from her previous personal best. Liam Tancock finished day 3 off for the Loughborough swimmers by dropping the British record under the 53 second barrier, his time of 52.73 means that he had dropped nearly 0.7 of a second from his previous standard. He eventually finished fourth just outside the medals. Another great day yesterday and more to come today from the Loughborough and GB team. Let's keep supporting!!! |
