The first event of the finals in Rome tonight saw Fran Halsall take on the fastest other seven 100 free sprinters in the world. She went into the race as the third fastest 100m free swimmer after her terrific British record leading off the 4x 100 free relay on the first day. This evening she really showed her class by being in the top three swimmers throughout the first seventy five metres. As others slowed in the final twenty five metres Fran propelled herself through to the Silver medal in a new British record time of 52.87. Other success followed for Loughborough swimmer Lizzie Simmonds who smashed her personal best time and also captured back the British record with a time of 2:07.21 for the 200m back. She goes into tomorrow night's final in 3rd place with GB teammate Gemma Spofforth in 5th. Rob Bale and Ross Davenport made up the quartet with Robbie Renwick(Glasgow) & David Carry(Stockport) to record a new British record time of 7:05.67 in the men's 4 x 200 free relay. Another fantastic night's swimming from Loughborough swimmers
