Loughborough swimmers lit up the Manchester Aquatic Centre when they fired up at the Duel in the Pool. Billed as a swimming spectacular, it was the USA (including the great Michael Phelps) who dominated the meet but Francesca Halsall and Lizzie Simmonds scored impressive victories and rewrote the record books. Francesca Halsall opened the proceedings with victory in the 100m freestyle (51.54) before going on to win the 100m butterfly in a new British Record of 55.71. Fran cam back on Day 2 to set a new British Record in the 200m freestyle with 1:53.79 (3rd) and sprinted to glory in the 50m freestyle to set a new British Record of 23.44 ( only 0.19 shy of the World Record) Teammate. Lizzie Simmonds, dominated the backstroke events with a new European Record of 2:00.91 in the 200m event and a new British Record of 56.69 in the 100m event. Double Olympic medallist, David Davies, put a disappointing first day behind him to place 3rd in the 800m freestyle in a new British Record of 7:36,47 With several swimmers missing from the E Stars Team it was Loughborough swimmers who dominated the top spot on the podium and scored valuable points for the underdogs.
