Loughborough swimmers opened their 2010 account with some fine early cycle performances at the Burns Open Meet.
Double Commonwealth Champion, Caitlin McClatchey, was on tremendous form, negative splitting the 400m freestyle to win in an impressive 4:10.05; teammate and World Record holder, Joanne Jackson taking second spot to make it a Loughborough 1-2. Amy Smith, British Record Holder, put on an outstaning display of speed and technique to complete a sprint double; taking the 50m freestyle in 26.14 and the 100m event in 56.44. Rapidly improving Kate Weaver took second spot in the 50m event with 26.62. Rachel Lefley took time out from exam revision to post a golden performance in the 200m backstroke (2:14.85) while Tilly Gray proved she is a force to be reckoned with by taking the 100m butterfly in 1:01.87, she also took bronze in the 200m butterfly. Commonwealth Games hopeful, Scott Hathaway, raced to victory in the 100m & 200m backstroke events; his time of 2:02.94 in the latter putting him in the frame for selection. Robert Bale utilised his superior pacing and technique to outswim his rivals over the closing stages of the 400m and take gold in 3:58.34. Kate Hutchinson continued her run of good form by setting a new univesity record of 4:50.05 to place 2nd in the 400m IM; she went on to take silver in the 200m IM and bronze in the 200m breaststroke. British & Commonwealth record holder, Joe Roebuck was in silver medal winning form, placing 2nd in the 100m butterfly, 200m freestyle and 200m IM. With solid performances throughout the 2 day meet the Loughborough Team look set to have an impressive season. |
