Outstanding preformances by Loughborough University swimmers secured the Men's, Women's and Overall Team Titles at the British Universities Championships in Ponds Forge, Sheffield. Caitlin McClatchey opened the proceedings by taking the women's 400m freestyle in a new record time of 4:10.20; teammate Louisa Farrer Fisher finishing 3rd in 4:15.28. Joe Roebuck, faced with a heavy programme of events, cruised the 400m IM to win in 4:23.74 before going on to win the 200m fly (2:02.92) and the 200m IM in a quality time of 2:02.78. Jade Barclay raced to a lifetime best of 2:13.48 to strike gold in the 200m butterfly whilst Kirsty Armstrong put in a blistering final 50m to take bronze in 2:17.25 Caitlin McClatchey sprinted to glory in the 100m freestyle (56.81) while rapidly improving Kate Weaver took bronze in 58.08. In the corresponding men's event Andy Bushell made the podium in 3rd spot with 52.17. Loughborough celebrated a sweep of the women's and men's 100m breaststroke titles with Kate Hutchinson taking the women's in 1:11.75 and Laurent Carnol the men's in 1:03.73; Michael Dawson finished superbly to clinch bronze. Matt Bowe scored valuable points to take silver in the 50m butterfly while Rachel Lefley & Becky Jenkins raced to silver and bronze in the 100m backstroke; 1:02.74 & 1:06.03 respectively. Liam Tancock posted a new record time of 54.42 to take the 100m backstroke; James Lovatt securing silver in 57.84. Both women's and men's gold medal winning medley relays produced two new record; Rachel Lefley leading off the women's in 1:02.04 and Liam Tancock leading off the men's in 53.84.
