A disqualification in the final event of the day, the men's 4 x 50m freesytle relay, proved costly for Loughborough at the BUCS League Final held in Sheffield. Despite fielding a "Development Team", Loughborough were surprise leaders for 23 out of the 24 events on the programme but two early takeovers in the final relay saw 18 points wiped from their total and Edinburgh take a steal to win the title by a single point (200 to 199) Loughborough tradtionally uses the BUCS League to rest the British Championships swimmers and give their developing swimmers an opportunity to race; winning being a bonus. Emma Gardner (pictured) stepped up to the plate to win the 100m breaststroke in a lifetime best of 1:14.74, she then went on to take 2nd spot in the 50m breaststroke in 34.98. Veteran retiree, Matt Bowe took the 50m freestyle whilst the women's 4 x 50m freestyle relay of Emily Key, Chloe Hart, Hannah Daley and Rachael Bowen put in a blistering performance to take gold.
Ian Armiger (Director of Swimming) said, " We rested 45 of our top swimmers from the meet and we were surprised to be leading and in with a chance. However, to be denied victory in this way is disappointing." Final Rankings were: 1st Edinburgh, 2nd Loughborough, 3rd Nottingham, 4th Oxford, 5th Manchester, 6th Birmingham, 7th Southampton, 8th Hertfordshire, 9th Stirling |
